RA NA Chairman’s Official Visit to the Republic of Poland

On March 16, the Armenian delegation headed on a visit to Poland held meetings with the members of Informacje o Sejmie RP the Polish Sejm. RA National Assembly Chairman Artur Baghdasaryan is the head of the delegation.

The sides discussed promoting bilateral inter-parliamentary relations during a meeting with the Polish Sejm Marshal Marek Borowski. Mr. Borowski stressed Poland’s interest in the South Caucasian region both in terms of promoting democracy and settling the current conflicts as well as transferring age-long ties to a new level and constantly putting up efforts in that direction. The Marshal also pledged commitment to developing inter-parliamentary cooperation in terms of legislative experience and raising awareness, as well as ensuring partnership between the committees and staff of the two parliaments. Given that Poland will become an EU member in May, the way Poland has covered towards the EU membership can prove useful for Armenia. The proposal submitted by RA NA Chairman to hold a joint Marszałek Sejmu - Marek Borowski conference in order to consider issues related to the integration into European Structures.  Mr. Baghdasaryan invited Polish Sejm Marshal Marek Borowski to visit Armenia. The Polish official willingly accepted the invitation.

During the meeting the parties also discussed other issues of mutual interest.


During the meeting with the members of the Armenia-Poland deputy friendship group and Lukas Abgarovic, the Head of the group, which operates in the Polish Sejm the parties stressed the prospects for developing bilateral relations, establishing efficient ties between the two Parliaments, exploring and implementing two countries’ experience during visits of the committee and staff members.


Steven Wagenseil, First Deputy Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, received the delegation at the OSCE ODIHR Office. The sides thoroughly considered issues related to the democracy development.  The parties stressed that honoring the greatest part of obligations entered into in terms of adhesion to the European Parliament Armenia carried out obligations related to the Constitutional Reforms: carried out the constitutional reforms, amended the Electoral Code, legislation on local self-governing bodies, legal-judicial reforms. Mr. Wagenseil praised the OSCE’s honoring huge amount of work done by the Armenian people of over a small spell of time, i.e. abolishment of the death penalty, ratification of the Social Charter, constitutional reform initiated by the Parliament is also highlighted. The OSCE official pledged commitment to offering assistance on any issue related to promoting democracy, protection of human rights and other issues within the scope of the OSCE/ODIHR authorities.


During a meeting with Marek Rocki, the Rector of the Warsaw Senior Economic School, the delegation members discussed issues related to higher educational systems of the two countries. The Economic School will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2006. Some 12,000 students study at School, which is considered the best economic educational institution in Poland. Not only Poles, but also international students from Canada and Baltic states pursue their studies at the Warsaw Senior Economic School.


Marek Rocki, the Rector of the Warsaw Senior Economic School, and Sergey Bichakhchyan, Rector of the Yerevan European Regional Academy, signed a partnership agreement.

The the same day the delegation headed by NA Speaker Artur Baghdasaryan laid a wreath to the Warsaw Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
 

Warsaw meetings will pursue on March 17.
